Heading into the ceremony he told San Diego's "Union-Tribune" that as a singer-songwriter he "tried to stand out and be the best," because he wasn't "the smartest or the strongest."  During the event, Kristofferson admitted he's suffering from memory loss he attributes to his days as a boxer.  He said the only things he remembers well these days are his family and his songs, adding that it meant a great deal to him that the Recording Academy found him deserving of the honor.

Kristofferson is part of a group of 2014 Lifetime Achievement recipients that also includes The Beatles, the Isley Brothers, and Kraftwerk.  Other honorees also include Clifton Chenier, Maud Powell, and Armando Manzanero, who is the first Mexican artist to receive the honor.
